The Small Beginning of a Long Fall

James 1:14-15

James writes that each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire, and then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. He is describing a process, slow and organic, the way one thing quietly becomes another. Nothing here happens all at once. There is a first pull, a flicker of wanting, and it feels so far from any real harm that we do not bother to resist it. James is warning us that the flicker is the beginning of something with a trajectory. Desire conceives, and what is conceived grows, and what grows eventually does real damage to your marriage, your faith, and your sense of who you are. The mercy in seeing this clearly is that it shows you where to intervene. You do not have to win the fight at the end, when sin is full grown and dragging you along. You can meet it at the beginning, when it is only a small stirring that would be easy to walk away from if you were paying attention. That early moment is where grace does its quietest work. Ask God to help you feel the pull for what it is, and to turn while turning is still simple.
