Chosen Before You Had a Record
Ephesians 1:4-5
Part of what makes this struggle so heavy is the belief that God's affection for you is a running total, adjusted up or down by your behavior. On that math, years of failure would leave you deep in the red, barely tolerated. Paul tells a different story about when God decided to love you. He writes that God chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption. Read that carefully. Before the foundation of the world. Before you were born, before you had done a single good or shameful thing, God set his love on you and planned your adoption. That means his choosing was never a response to your performance, because there was no performance yet to respond to. Nothing you have done since could be the reason he chose you, and so nothing you do now can be the reason he unchooses you. His love has roots that reach back further than your first sin and hold firmer than your worst day. When the accusing voice tallies your failures tonight, remember that the decision about you was made long before that list existed. You were wanted before you could disappoint anyone. Let that quiet the arithmetic for a while.
