For the wife standing at the crossroads
Should I Stay After My Husband's Affair?
There is no question harder than this one. You don't have to answer it today, and you don't have to answer it alone.
You don't have to decide today
After an affair, many wives feel pressure to decide right away — from family, friends, church, sometimes from their own racing mind. But decisions made in the first weeks of shock are rarely the ones you would make with a clearer head. It is wise, and allowed, to wait.
In the meantime, you can take care of your safety, your health and your heart, and let what happens in him over the coming months help inform what you decide.
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding." — Proverbs 3:5
This decision is yours
We can't tell you whether to stay, and no one else should make that choice for you. Scripture takes the covenant of marriage seriously, and it also takes betrayal seriously. Many wives find it helpful to talk this through with a pastor they trust and a Christian counselor experienced with infidelity, so they are weighing it with wise people rather than alone.
What we can do is help you see clearly.
What to look for in him
A husband who is truly turning around usually shows it over time, not in a single emotional conversation:
- The affair is over completely, with no contact, and he has been honest about how it ended.
- He tells the truth — fully, with help — instead of offering new pieces each time you discover something.
- He offers transparency about his phone, schedule and whereabouts without being forced.
- He has other men in his life who know everything and hold him to it.
- He owns it without blaming you, the marriage, or circumstances.
- He is patient with your grief. He doesn't push you to "move on" or treat your questions as attacks.
If those things are missing, that tells you something important. If they are present and growing, that tells you something too.
What you need, whatever you decide
- Safety — physical, emotional and medical. See a doctor and be tested for sexually transmitted infections.
- Support of your own — a counselor, a few trusted friends, and women who understand. B.O.L.D. for Women is here for you.
- Room to grieve. Grief after betrayal comes in waves, and that's normal.
- Honesty with yourself about what you're seeing, not only what you're hoping.
A word of hope
Some marriages do come back from an affair, and some become stronger and more honest than they ever were. That happens when a husband stops hiding and does the long work, and a wife is cared for rather than rushed. If that's your story, it will be because of God's grace and a lot of patient, honest steps — not because you made yourself "get over it."
"I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten." — Joel 2:25

Should I stay with my husband after he cheated?
Only you can make that choice, and you don't have to make it right away. Take care of your safety and health, get support, and watch over the coming months whether he ends the affair completely, tells the full truth, offers transparency, has other men holding him accountable, and is patient with your grief.
How long should I wait before deciding whether to stay?
There's no set timeline. Many counselors advise against major decisions in the first weeks of shock. Give yourself time to see whether real change is happening in him.
What are signs my husband is truly sorry?
The affair is fully over with no contact, he tells the whole truth rather than trickle confessions, he offers transparency, he has men in his life who know everything, he owns it without excuses, and he is patient with your healing.
Can a marriage be stronger after an affair?
Some are, when a husband stops hiding and does the long work and a wife is cared for rather than rushed. Reconciliation is something to hope for, never a deadline you owe anyone.
Is there support for wives deciding whether to stay?
Yes. B.O.L.D.'s women's ministry, led by co-founder Amber Stewart, walks with wives through betrayal. A pastor you trust and a Christian counselor experienced with infidelity can also help.
