The label matters less than the pattern

Is Porn Addiction Real?

Experts debate the word. Men who can't stop don't need a debate. They need a way out.

What professionals say

Whether "porn addiction" is an addiction in the clinical sense is debated among professionals. The American Psychiatric Association's DSM-5 does not list pornography addiction as a diagnosis. The World Health Organization's ICD-11 does include compulsive sexual behaviour disorder, which describes a persistent pattern of failing to control intense sexual urges or behavior despite harm and repeated efforts to stop.

So the experts don't agree on the word. But nearly everyone agrees that some people lose control of their pornography use, and it costs them dearly.

Why the label matters less than the pattern

A man doesn't need a diagnosis to know he's in trouble. The questions that matter are simpler:

  • Have you tried to stop and not been able to?
  • Has it grown — more often, more extreme, into new places?
  • Do you hide it and lie to cover it?
  • Is it costing you sleep, work, money, your marriage, your walk with God?
  • Do you feel unable to tell anyone the whole truth?

If the answer to several is yes, you're dealing with more than an occasional temptation. Call it addiction, compulsion or a stronghold — you need more than willpower.

What Scripture says

Scripture doesn't use the modern word, but it describes the pattern precisely: a man doing what he hates (Romans 7:15), a desire that is never satisfied (Proverbs 27:20), a stronghold that has to be torn down (2 Corinthians 10:4–5). It also promises what no diagnosis can: freedom.

"For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery." — Galatians 5:1

What actually helps

  1. Honesty with other men. Secrecy is fuel. A small group of brothers who know everything takes it away.
  2. Daily accountability, not a monthly question.
  3. Guards on your devices you choose yourself. See Watchman+.
  4. Healing the roots, not just managing the behavior — shame, wounds, identity.
  5. Professional help when it's needed. Some men need a licensed counselor alongside their brothers, and there's no shame in that.

Common questions

Is porn addiction a real diagnosis?

It's debated. The DSM-5 does not list pornography addiction, while the World Health Organization's ICD-11 includes compulsive sexual behaviour disorder, a persistent pattern of failing to control sexual urges or behavior despite harm and repeated efforts to stop.

How do I know if I'm addicted to porn?

Ask whether you've tried to stop and couldn't, whether it has grown, whether you hide it and lie, whether it's costing you, and whether you feel unable to tell anyone. Several yes answers mean you need more than willpower.

What does the Bible say about porn addiction?

Scripture doesn't use the modern word, but it describes the pattern of doing what you hate (Romans 7:15), never-satisfied desire (Proverbs 27:20) and strongholds that must be torn down (2 Corinthians 10:4-5), and it promises freedom in Christ (Galatians 5:1).

Can porn addiction be overcome?

Yes. Men get free through honesty with other men, daily accountability, guards on their devices, healing the roots, and professional help when it's needed.

Is there Christian help for porn addiction?

B.O.L.D. places men in packs of 4 to 6 with a leader, with daily check-ins, weekly meetings and a 52-week workbook. The Watchman app is free.
