The First Step Is Always the Same
You are not a project to God. You are His son. The first step out of pornography is the same step every brother before you took: confession.
"Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy." — Proverbs 28:13
Brother — you picked up your phone tonight expecting to do the same thing you did last night, and the night before that, and the night before that. And the Spirit of God redirected you to this page instead. He is not surprised by you. He has not turned away from you. He is calling you out of the cave.
Hear this in the first thirty seconds, before the shame voice starts arguing with me: God is not surprised by you. You are not a project to Him. You are His son.
The first step out of pornography — the same first step every brother in B.O.L.D. has taken — is not willpower. It is not a content blocker. It is not a fresh streak. It is confession. Out loud, by name, to another man who is going to love you anyway and not let you go.
I know what you are thinking. I'll get a handle on this first, then tell someone. That is the lie that has kept you in the dark for ten years. It will keep you there for another ten if you let it. The order is reversed: you will not get a handle on this until you tell someone.
Three things to do before you go to sleep tonight:
- Get on your knees and tell God, by name, what you have been doing. Not "Lord forgive me of all my sins." That is a religious sentence. Be specific. "Lord, I have been looking at pornography. I have been masturbating to it. Tonight. Yesterday. For years." The specific is what breaks open the chest.
- Text one brother — not a friend, not a guy from church you barely know, a brother — and tell him you fell. If you do not have one, find one tomorrow. The B.O.L.D. groups exist because no man fights this alone and wins.
- Open this app at 6:00am tomorrow and post ✋ in your team check-in. The hand is not a hand of condemnation. It is the hand of confession. It is the hand James 5:16 was talking about when he said "confess your sins to one another, that you may be healed."
You will not be free tomorrow. Real freedom is a two-to-five-year walk. But you will not be alone for the first night of it. That is the whole point.
Welcome, brother. Get up. The Lion of Judah lives in you.
