Sin Grows in the Dark. Bring It Out.

The thief loves the dark. He cannot work in the light. Every hidden sin is a sin that has not yet started to die.

"But everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light." — John 3:20–21

Brother, the most spiritual-sounding lie I ever told myself was this: I'll just deal with it between me and God.

It sounds humble. It sounds private. It sounds like the right answer for a sin you are ashamed of. And it is the exact strategy the enemy wants you to use, because it keeps the sin in the dark, where it grows.

Hidden sin is fed sin. Exposed sin is starved sin. Every hour you wait to bring something into the light is an hour the thing has to put down deeper roots. By 24 hours you are constructing the cover story. By a week the cover story has become your reality. By a month you are a different man than the one who fell, and you are spending most of your energy maintaining the appearance of the man you used to be.

There is a reason James does not say "confess your sins to God and you will be healed." He says "confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed." The healing is in the bringing-out. The healing is in the saying-it-to-a-brother's-face.

The 24-hour rule we hold to in B.O.L.D. groups is not legalism. It is medicine. If you fall, you tell your team within 24 hours. Not because the sin gets less heavy after 25 hours — but because at hour 25 the cover story starts. We are trying to outrun the cover story.

Three checks for whether something is still in the dark:

  • Have you told one brother by name?
  • Are you ashamed for someone to see your screen time report?
  • Is there a folder, a tab, an account, a website your wife does not know about?

If the answer to any of these is yes, you are still managing in the dark. The Spirit is asking you to come out. You are not going to be condemned on the way out. You are going to be received.

The shame voice will tell you that exposure will destroy you. The Spirit tells you that exposure is what saves you. One of those voices has been lying to you for years. The other is your Father.

Pick which one you are going to believe tonight, and act on it before you sleep.
