Two Kinds of Sorrow
2 Corinthians 7:10
Not all pain over sin is the same, and learning to tell them apart may be one of the most important things a man in this fight ever does. Paul names the difference plainly. Godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death. There is a sorrow that turns you toward God and a sorrow that only sinks you, and they can feel similar in the moment while leading to opposite places.
Worldly grief is the endless loop of self-hatred after a fall. It replays the failure, calls you names, and leaves you facedown, too disgusted with yourself to move toward anyone. It feels like humility, but it produces nothing but death, because it keeps your eyes fixed on you and never lifts them to God. Godly grief hurts too, but it moves. It turns, walking back toward the Father instead of curling inward.
When the pain comes after you have blown it, ask where it is taking you. If it is dragging you down into a pit and keeping you there, that is not the Spirit; it is the old accuser wearing the mask of conscience. The sorrow God gives always has a door in it, and the door opens toward him.
Lord, help me tell the sorrow that heals from the sorrow that only buries me. Turn my grief toward you, and let it lead me home rather than down.
