The Way Back for a Man Who Fell

Galatians 6:1

Paul gives instructions for the hard moment, the one where a brother has been caught and everyone knows it. He writes that if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness, keeping watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. The word restore is the same one used for setting a broken bone. Anyone who has felt a bone set knows it is careful work, done by someone steady, meant to bring the thing back into place so it can carry weight again.

Paul does not tell the strong to shame the fallen or to hold them at arm's length. He tells them to move in close and mend. And then he adds a warning that keeps the whole thing humble, that the one doing the restoring should watch himself, because he is made of the same stuff. This is the posture your pack owes you when you stumble, and the posture you owe them.

If a brother has fallen this week, go to him gently, remembering how much you have needed gentleness yourself. Pray that God would make you the kind of man who mends rather than breaks.
