# What to Do After a Relapse

## First: you are not finished

If you've just had a setback, you may feel like every clean day was a lie and you're back at the start. You're not. A setback is painful, and it matters, but it doesn't erase what God has been doing in you. **What you do in the next hour matters more than what happened in the last one.**

> *"For the righteous falls seven times and rises again."* — Proverbs 24:16

## In the next hour

1. **Get away from the screen.** Close it, leave the room, put the phone somewhere else.
2. **Tell someone.** Text a brother in your pack: "I fell tonight." That one sentence breaks the cycle of secrecy that makes the next fall more likely.
3. **Check in honestly.** In the Watchman app, mark today as a setback. Your pack will know to reach out.
4. **Pray, even briefly.** Not to earn your way back, but to come home: *"Father, I fell. I'm Yours. Help me."*

## In the next day

- **Talk it through** with a brother or your leader. Not to be punished — to be helped.
- **Trace the path.** Where were you? What time was it? Were you tired, alone, bored, stressed, hurting? Most falls follow a pattern long before the click.
- **Close the door that was open.** A device without protection, a late night alone, a particular app. Make one concrete change today. If you don't have a guard on your devices yet, see [Watchman+](/watchman-plus).
- **If you're married,** decide with your leader how and when to be honest with your wife. Hiding it from her rebuilds the wall you're trying to tear down. Our post on [how to tell your wife](/blog/how-to-tell-your-wife) can help.

## What not to do

- **Don't hide it.** Secrecy is what turns one fall into a spiral.
- **Don't punish yourself** with self-hatred. Shame doesn't lead to freedom; it leads back to the screen.
- **Don't quit your pack** because you're embarrassed. This is exactly what they're for.
- **Don't make a vow** you can't keep. Make one change you can.

## Shame versus conviction

Conviction says, *"You did wrong; come back."* Shame says, *"You are wrong; stay away."* One comes from God and leads you home. The other keeps you hiding. Read [shame vs. conviction](/blog/shame-vs-conviction) and [relapse after months clean](/blog/relapse-after-months-clean).

## If you don't have a pack yet

You don't have to do this alone. B.O.L.D. places men in a pack of four to six men with a leader, with a daily check-in and weekly meetings. The Watchman app is free. Start at [/join](/join).

## What should I do right after a porn relapse?

Get away from the screen, tell a brother in your pack, check in honestly as a setback, and pray briefly to come home rather than to earn your way back. Bringing it into the light quickly breaks the cycle of secrecy.

## Should I tell my accountability partner I relapsed?

Yes, as soon as you can. One honest text breaks the secrecy that makes the next fall more likely, and your brothers can help you trace what led to it.

## Does a relapse mean I'm back to the beginning?

No. A setback is painful and matters, but it doesn't erase what God has been doing in you. What you do in the next hour matters more than what happened in the last one.

## Should I tell my wife about a relapse?

Hiding it rebuilds the wall you're trying to tear down. Decide with your leader how and when to be honest with her, with care for how it will land.

## How do I stop relapsing?

Trace the pattern that led to the fall, close the specific door that was open, keep a daily check-in with brothers who know everything, and add guards on your devices. Avoid self-hatred, which leads back to hiding.
