# My Husband Had an Affair: Where to Turn

## You are allowed to be undone

An affair breaks more than a promise. It can make you question your memories, your judgment and your own worth. You may replay every late night and every excuse. You may feel rage one hour and numbness the next. You may love him and not be able to stand the sight of him, both at once.

**All of this is the normal response to betrayal.** You did not cause his choice, and you are not responsible for repairing it alone.

> *"Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you."* — Psalm 55:22

## The first days: protecting you

- **Your safety first.** If he has become threatening, or you are afraid, use the safety resources below before anything else.
- **Your health.** It is wise, and not an accusation, to see a doctor and be tested for sexually transmitted infections. Many wives find this painful to think about; doing it is an act of care for yourself.
- **Your support.** Tell one or two safe people — a trusted friend, a counselor, a pastor you trust, or the women at [B.O.L.D. for Women](/bold-women). Isolation makes this heavier.
- **Your pace.** You do not have to decide about the marriage this week. Big decisions made in shock are rarely the ones we would choose later.
- **Your questions.** You deserve honest answers. A counselor experienced with infidelity can help you decide what you need to know, and help him tell the truth without wounding you further.

## What repentance looks like

Regret over being caught is not the same thing as repentance. When a husband is truly turning around, you will usually see:

1. **The affair ended completely**, with no contact, and you told the truth about how it was ended.
2. **Full disclosure** over time, ideally guided by a counselor, rather than new revelations every few weeks.
3. **Transparency he offers**, not secrecy he defends — his phone, his schedule, his whereabouts.
4. **Other men in his life** who know the whole story and hold him to it.
5. **Ownership without excuses.** Not "if you had…" but "I chose this, and I am sorry."
6. **Patience with your grief.** He accepts that trust comes back slowly and that your healing has its own timeline.

## Why affairs rarely start with the affair

Most affairs grow out of something that was hidden long before: pornography, secret messaging, emotional entanglements, or a life lived in compartments. That is why lasting change has to reach the roots and not just end one relationship. It is also why a man needs other men walking with him, not just a promise to try harder.

## How B.O.L.D. can help him

B.O.L.D. is a Christian men's ministry built for men leaving a double life behind. A husband who is ready joins a **pack of four to six men with a leader**, checks in every day, and works through a 52-week workbook that goes after the roots of sexual sin. The pack meets weekly, prays together and does not let a man hide. The Watchman app is free.

Some husbands choose **Watchman+** as an extra layer: it blocks explicit content on his devices and can share his location with you, so honesty is something he offers rather than something you chase. See [what a wife sees in Watchman](/what-a-wife-sees-in-watchman) for exactly what that does and does not show.

When you are ready to talk with him about getting help, [this guide](/how-to-talk-to-your-husband-about-getting-help) can help.

## Can a marriage survive an affair?

Some do — not by pretending it didn't happen, but by walking honestly through it, often with a counselor, over months and years. Reconciliation is a hope, never an obligation, and it is never something you owe anyone on a timeline. Whatever happens in your marriage, your own healing is worth fighting for. Read [Rebuilding trust with your wife](/blog/rebuilding-trust-with-your-wife) to see what we ask of the husbands.

## If you are not safe

If he has threatened or hurt you, if you are afraid of him, or if a child may be at risk, please step away from this page and reach out right now:

- **Immediate danger:** call **911**.
- **National Domestic Violence Hotline:** call **1-800-799-7233** or text **START** to **88788**. Free, confidential, any hour.
- **Thoughts of ending your life:** call or text **988**, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
- **A child may be harmed:** call the **Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline** at **1-800-422-4453**, or your local police.

Nothing about saving a marriage asks you to stay quiet about harm. Your safety, and your children's, comes first.

Visit [For wives](/for-wives), write to Amber at [B.O.L.D. for Women](/bold-women), or reach the ministry at [/contact](/contact).

## What should I do first after finding out my husband had an affair?

Make sure you are safe, tell one or two trusted people, see a doctor to be tested for sexually transmitted infections, and give yourself permission not to decide about the marriage right away. A counselor experienced with infidelity can help with what comes next.

## How do I know if my husband is truly repentant?

Look for the affair ended with no contact, full disclosure rather than trickle truths, transparency he offers, other men who know the whole story, ownership without excuses, and patience with your grief.

## Can a Christian marriage survive an affair?

Many do, when a husband stops hiding and does the work and a wife is cared for and given time. Reconciliation is something to hope for, never something you owe anyone on a deadline.

## Is there Christian help for a husband who cheated?

Yes. B.O.L.D. places men in a pack of 4 to 6 men with a leader, with daily check-ins, weekly meetings and a 52-week workbook that addresses the roots of sexual sin. The Watchman app is free.

## Is there support for me as the wife?

Yes. B.O.L.D.'s women's ministry, led by co-founder Amber Stewart, is for wives walking through betrayal, whether or not their husband is in B.O.L.D.
