# How Do I Know If My Husband Is Addicted to Porn?

## Trust what you are noticing

Many wives sense something long before they find anything. A distance in the marriage. A phone that is never put down, or always face-down. Late nights that don't add up. If that's you, **your instinct deserves to be taken seriously.** You are not paranoid for wanting the truth.

At the same time, it is not your job to investigate your husband into honesty. You can notice, and ask, without becoming a detective.

> *"For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest."* — Luke 8:17

## Signs that use has become a compulsion

Only a qualified professional can diagnose anything, and no single sign proves a problem. But wives often describe patterns like these:

- **Secrecy and defensiveness** around his phone, computer or browsing, including deleted history, hidden apps or new passwords.
- **He has promised to stop, and hasn't.** Repeated confessions followed by the same thing again are one of the clearest signs he can't stop on his own.
- **It is escalating** — more often, more extreme, or spilling into new places like chat sites, apps or messaging.
- **It costs something:** sleep, work, money, intimacy in the marriage, or his relationship with God.
- **He is irritable, withdrawn or numb** when he can't get time alone.
- **Lies to cover the gaps** — about where he's been, what he was doing, or why he's up so late.

If several of these are true, it's likely more than an occasional temptation. It may be a compulsion that willpower alone won't break.

## What you can't know from the outside

You can't see inside his heart, and you can't always know how deep this goes. Some men hide it well for years. That's why the most important step isn't proof — it's a conversation that invites him into the light, and help that doesn't depend on you watching him.

## What to do next

1. **Take care of yourself first.** Talk to someone safe — a trusted friend, a counselor, or the women at [B.O.L.D. for Women](/bold-women).
2. **Tell him what you've noticed** and what you need, calmly and simply. Our guide on [how to talk to your husband about getting help](/how-to-talk-to-your-husband-about-getting-help) can help you prepare.
3. **Point him to real help.** B.O.L.D. places men in a pack of four to six men with a leader, with a daily check-in, weekly meetings and a 52-week workbook. The Watchman app is free.
4. **Know what you would see if he chooses accountability.** With Watchman+, he can connect you so you're told when he may need support. Read [what a wife sees in Watchman](/what-a-wife-sees-in-watchman).

If you've already found something, start with [I found out my husband is watching porn](/husband-watching-porn).

## If you are not safe

If he has threatened or hurt you, or you are afraid of him, please reach out right now:

- **Immediate danger:** call **911**.
- **National Domestic Violence Hotline:** call **1-800-799-7233** or text **START** to **88788**. Free, confidential, any hour.
- **Thoughts of ending your life:** call or text **988**, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Nothing about saving a marriage asks you to stay quiet about harm. Your safety comes first.

## You don't have to carry this alone

Visit [For wives](/for-wives), or reach out to the ministry at [/contact](/contact).

## How can I tell if my husband is addicted to porn?

Warning signs include secrecy and defensiveness about his devices, promising to stop and not stopping, use that is escalating, real costs to sleep, work, money or intimacy, irritability when he can't be alone, and lies to cover the gaps. Only a professional can diagnose, but several of these together usually mean more than an occasional temptation.

## Should I check my husband's phone to find out?

You don't have to investigate him into honesty. It's usually better to tell him what you've noticed, ask for the truth, and point him to accountability that doesn't depend on you watching him.

## What if my husband denies it?

Denial is common, especially when shame runs deep. You can calmly state what you've noticed and what you need, protect your own heart, lean on support, and keep the door to help open.

## Can a husband addicted to porn change?

Yes. Men do get free, usually through full honesty, other men who know the whole story, daily accountability, guards on their devices and time. B.O.L.D. places men in packs of 4 to 6 with a leader for exactly this.

## Where can I get support as his wife?

B.O.L.D.'s women's ministry, led by co-founder Amber Stewart, walks with wives whether or not their husband is in B.O.L.D. You can also find resources at boldmen.org/for-wives.
