# Accountability for Pastors and Ministry Leaders Who Are Struggling

## Why it's so hard for leaders

A pastor or ministry leader struggling with pornography carries a weight most men don't. You may fear losing your job, your reputation, your ministry, or the trust of people you love. You may feel like a hypocrite every time you speak about holiness. And the people you'd normally turn to — your elders, your staff, your congregation — are the very people you're most afraid to tell.

So you stay silent. And silence is exactly where this grows.

> *"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."* — 1 John 1:9

## You are not disqualified from grace

Your struggle doesn't put you beyond the reach of God. Scripture is full of leaders who fell and were restored. What matters now isn't protecting an image; it's coming into the light before the struggle costs more than it already has — your marriage, your health, your walk with God, and eventually your ministry.

## Where to turn

- **A trusted peer outside your chain of authority** — a pastor friend at another church, a mentor, a counselor.
- **A Christian counselor** experienced with sexual compulsion, bound by confidentiality.
- **A small group of men who know everything.** Not a congregation. Not a board. A few brothers, under a code of silence, who hear from you every day.

You don't have to choose between honesty and wisdom. You can be fully honest with a few safe men while you prayerfully decide, with counsel, what else needs to happen.

## What accountability looks like for a leader

1. **Daily honesty** with a small pack — clear, tempted, or a setback.
2. **Guards on every device** you use, including the ones at the office. See [Watchman+](/watchman-plus).
3. **Going after the roots** — loneliness, exhaustion, isolation and the pressure of always being "the strong one" often sit underneath.
4. **Honesty at home.** If you're married, your wife deserves the truth. Get counsel on how to tell her well.
5. **Rest and support** — leaders who never stop being needed are especially vulnerable.

## How B.O.L.D. can help

B.O.L.D. is a Christian men's ministry that places men in packs of four to six men with a leader, under a code of silence, with daily check-ins, weekly meetings and a 52-week workbook. If you'd rather not be in a pack with men from your own congregation, [contact us](/contact) and ask about being placed with men outside your church. The Watchman app is free, and [what your accountability partner sees](/what-does-my-accountability-partner-see) explains exactly what stays private.

## Start with one sentence

Tell one safe man the truth this week. Then let him help you take the next step. Start at [/join](/join) or reach out at [/contact](/contact).

## Where can a pastor get help for pornography?

A trusted peer outside your chain of authority, a Christian counselor bound by confidentiality, and a small group of men under a code of silence who hear from you daily. B.O.L.D. offers packs of 4 to 6 men with a leader, and you can ask to be placed with men outside your own church.

## Can a pastor be restored after struggling with porn?

Your struggle doesn't put you beyond God's grace, and Scripture includes leaders who fell and were restored. What matters is coming into the light before it costs more, with wise counsel about what else needs to happen.

## Should a pastor tell his church about a porn struggle?

Start by being fully honest with a few safe men and a counselor, and seek wise counsel about what else needs to happen. You don't have to choose between honesty and wisdom.

## Is accountability software private for pastors?

With Watchman+, your pack is told when you may need support and when, with a general category, never the website, the content or your browsing history, and there's no stealth mode.

## Why do pastors struggle with pornography?

Leaders often face loneliness, exhaustion, isolation and the pressure of always being the strong one, with few safe places to confess. Those roots need care, not just the behavior.
